Helen Fanning: Moved from Chico/Paradise, California to Minden, NV in 2001. I was a career woman for 40 years in Data Processing as a programmer and manager. Retired in 1992, then found art to be the next part of my life in creating just like I did as a programmer. All of my life I have always been artistic, whether it was sewing as I created my own patterns, re-upholstered furniture, decorating my home, created my own recipes, singing or playing a cello, piano etc. All this is a form of art. When I discovered, I could draw a straight line and create a scene, my imagination went wild.
I took up classes in art, belonged to a video club of art, from all different painting artists. I have a collection of "How to do" videos, (more than 200) so that I could slow the video down to watch how to use the paint brush, mix colors and learn the fine details in art. I started branching out learning all about mediums, mixed media textures and mixing gels with paint to form the feeling of being there at the scene, and I encourage you touch the canvas. I started pastels and colored pencil after I moved to Nevada. I am a member of the Carson Valley Art Association and the Nevada Artist Association. I have designed the brochure for the Brewery Art Gallery in Carson City, Nevada and am the news editor for both artist association. I am a docent to the Brewery Art Gallery weekly and was a docent to the Chico Art Association for 10 years in Chico, Calif until moving to Nevada. I am a member of the Carson Valley Christian Church and very active in the children's ministry and the senior ambassadors.
Barbara Dragon: I've been married for 27 years to great guy who is a dentist. We own our own dental practice. We've raised 3 boys who are now 23 and a UNR graduate in Civil Engineering, 20 and a UNR student majoring in Economics, and a 17 year old who is a senior in high school at home but actually takes all his classes at WNC. The oldest and youngest were home schooled K-12 and the middle son was home schooled K-8 and opted to attend Douglas High School.
I was leader of the Carson Valley Christian Home Educators from 1994-97, co-chairman of NNHS from 1996-1997, Treasure for the Silver State Education Association from 1994-1999 and served on the NNHSAC from 1997 to 2007. I taught jr./sr high courses in Economics, Civics, and Debate for three years with the co-op. I am currently serving as secretary for Nevada Homeschool Network. As my career as a homeschool mom winds down I'm searching and trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up! It has been such a blessing to raise my three boys, they all honor me and their father by making good Biblical choices for their lives. But now it is time to seek other areas of involvement. Although I am fully involved in the financial side of my husband's business I still have time to minister in other areas now that boys are gone. And seeking new friendships that center around other women instead of just our children is another goal. So I wake each day wondering what the Lord has in store for me... Hopefully one those opportunities will be to teach your children in several subjects dear to my heart as well as mentor moms who aren't sure they can push all the way through high school.
God bless all you faithful families...it is a good work you do.
